Band Poster - 2 colour

The challenge was to paint a poster for a band, using only two colours (but could include tints and shades of those colours). It's gouache, which is horrible for big projects when you'll need to keep mixing more paint of the same colour.

The assignment: to design a series of billboard ads for a fictional restaurant where you bring your own RAW MEAT.

Awkward two people and hands painting

For this one, we had two models which we drew separately (they were sitting back to back), and had to integrate into a single composition, put them in some situation together and paint with oils. And we had to fit their hands in. Which I think is why the hands and faces look too big for the bodies. In any case, I wanted to put them at the prom in the 60s, but the girl's hair just isn't right, and the guy's suit is dreadful. Kinda like the hands though.

So many posts today, it's almost as if I have some free time now... almost. This was fun, it's amazing how you can just slap some paint around and when you stand back it kinda looks like something!

More portraits! In oils this time!

Portraits really seem to be a theme in this program. Which I don't mind, I just need to branch out and find some new 'hot men' to paint ;o) Also need to work on clothes.

More Illustration final projects

This was my 6th attempt at doing a figure using acrylics which are super frustrating.  They don't blend and they dry too quickly. Argh. But anyway, an excuse to stare at a photo of John Krasinski for a while. :o)  The pants have problems though, my reference photo cut him off at the zipper, and I was hesitant to ask someone in class to be my pants model.  

I picked up a book on Edward Gorey and was inspired to do something in his style.  For the subject matter I chose the wood chipper scene from Fargo.  I think it was appropriate.  The paper photographed wonkily, and that's why the lettering is so terrible. Really.

Illustration History

For our Illustration History class, instead of a test, we had to do an illustration for our final project.  We had to choose an illustrator we liked and I chose Skip Liepke.  I tried, but didn't quite get it right, it needed to be a lot butterier and smudgier or something. Sigh.

CD Cover

Colour theory class is awesome with really fun projects - our latest one was to design a cd booklet for a song/band/style of music you like.  Mine was 'The start of something' by Voxtrot.  We were supposed to keep in mind the five senses and also include the golden triangle etc.  

Concept: The hamsters are having a dance party, and the humans are working the fast food concession stands.  Yeah - this makes no sense. :o)

 I don't really think this looks like him, he had a toothpick in his mouth but I was too lazy to include his hand/toothpick.  Not that the toothpick would make much difference.  Gouache on watercolour paper.

More face...

I just realized that we do a lot of faces, but faces are fun so that's okay.  Haven't yet figured out how to use pastels so they don't look like rainbow brite vomit.  Anyway, just trying to work out Jason Schwartzman's face so I can do a portrait for a friend's very belated birthday.

We were supposed to do one drawing 'low key' and the other 'high key.'  I found this one kinda hard because I don't usually draw very dark.  And I think she's missing something above the ear, but I noticed that after.   The weird cat face was part of the original photo.

Alfred

After a whole year of drawing with coloured pencil, I was dismayed to realize I no longer knew how to draw with a regular graphite pencil.  And we were allowed to use an eraser even!!!  

I <3 IDEA!!!

It's been a month now, and I'm really enjoying the IDEA program.  This week we were playing around with brush and ink in illustration class.
